iirc foobar2000 should be able to do it (assuming you got the decoders/encoder installed that are needed to decode mp4 and encode mp3)
see: www.foobar2000.org/
you could also use graphedit (allso assuming you got the the required decoder/encoder)
Cu Selur

--- do not install any codec packs on your system, they tend to screw the system---

Not necessarely indeed... I just try not to advise people to do something that might cause them trouble.
What's with sarcasm?... Funny how moderators on this board seem to be much more agressive than simple members. I've been a moderator for different boards and always thought that a moderator should not "flame" people... Too bad you and your pal Stux don't think the same way.
Keep on with that good spirit of yours, I'm going back to the "grown up" boards. Bye, bye kids.

Be fair now, Stux always comes off as proverbally jovial; V99 is the one known for the gruff, no-nonsense sarcasm masking a heart of gold*.

is there a possibility to convert protected mpeg-4 aac audio files bought from iTunes to mp3?

Yes.
Tunebite records your DRM copy-protected music, audio books and video files as they are being played and saves the recordings as unprotected audio (MP3, WMA, OGG and WAV) and video (WMV, MP4 and MPEG4) files. Tunebite’s clever approach has been reviewed and praised by numerous computer journals and internet portals around the world as the ideal and totally legal solution for creating private copies of copy-protected files.
Tunebite Platinum +MPEG4 - full Platinum feature set plus 3ivx encoder
And for those on-the-go, Tunebite Platinum +MPEG4 Edition — a complete solution with 3ivx MPEG-4 encoder — lets you save videos as unprotected MPEG-4 videos you can play on any video-enabled mobile device.

(i've been removing spam posts... and I might as well replace theirs with mine, TuneBite is a great program btw)
3ivx is pronounced Thriv-ex

I have compared different converters and I recommend Convert-tune to download video and audio easily.
It converts music and movies, and also burn files on CDs. The converter is
easy to install and use.
